Sirila gentlemän sökes

Alma and Margit are neighbors and best friends. Their days pass slowly and pleasantly, but their peaceful existence is being threatened. Tomelilla County have plans to build a new road right across their properties and the women’s homes will be razed to the ground. The friends end up sharing a room at a retirement home while waiting for senior apartments. Life at the retirement home is exciting. Alma and Margit discover that the grumpy director Ulla has steamy trysts with her lover in the bushes outside Alma and Margit’s room and when the lover, Kjell, turns out to be a local politician Alma starts concocting plans. She takes a compromising photograph with her old box camera and threatens to reveal them if Ulla and the politician don’t take action concerning the county’s construction plans: particularly the route across hers and Margit’s properties! While a hysterical Kjell schemes at town hall, Alma and Margit devote themselves to buying their first pairs of long trousers – with elastic waistbands – and dream about meeting a nice man. The day dreams result in a personal ad with the headline: “Seeking Sirile Gentlemen.” Alma is the one who suggests it. She believes “sirile” has something to do with energy and happiness, though she’s not entirely sure …

”Seeking Sirile Gentlemen. We’re two single women, 81 and 79 years old (one of us has a slight limp) and we’re each looking for a male companion. It would be wonderful if you lived in Tomelilla and have a car so that you can drive us to Kivik when the fruit trees are in bloom.

VILLA BONITA

Bonita is 57 years old and she hasn’t moved from home yet. She never will. Bonita lives with her senile mother in their big villa in Ystad, a small and idyllic town in the south of Sweden. She never really met any men in her youth and now she feels old and tired. During a few years, Bonita worked as a cook in a military regiment, but when her father died she promised him to take care of his sickly wife, her mother - and that’s what she has been doing for many years now. Her best friend and neighbour Doris, got married and moved to the big town in her early twenties. Thirty years later, when her parents died, she decided to move back to her childhood home next to Bonita after an uninspiring marriage with a boring man.

Doris has always been the elegant one with her red nails and beautiful shoes. Bonita, on the other hand; clumsy and shy with no experience of the “big world”. But when Doris comes home, their old friendship soon flourishes again. And when Doris finds out what kind of dirty company she is working for, she starts making wild and fantasttic plans and Bonita gets involved. Soon their houses are filled with women in need and Doris’s unintelligent employees get more and more nervous.

A wonderful story about female empowerment. In Villa Bonita Karin Brunk Holmquist is in great form; sparkling, funny and with a tender twinkle in her eye.
